Here's how to get started with Textika, plus answers to the things people usually ask about.

Requirements

Getting started

  1. Open Textika and choose Open Folder (⇧⌘O), or create a new workspace from the welcome screen.
  2. Pick a file in the sidebar, or create a new one with ⌘T.
  3. Write. Press ⌘\ to see the preview and ⌘/ for the Markdown cheat sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes saved?

Where you put them. Textika works directly with the .md files in the folder you open, and adds no database or format of its own.

What is a workspace?

Just a folder. Open it with ⇧⌘O or from the welcome screen, and its Markdown files show up in the sidebar. Textika remembers your latest workspaces, so you can get back to them quickly.

How do WikiLinks work?

Write the name of another note inside double brackets, like [[Meeting notes]], and ⌘-click it to go there. If the note doesn't exist yet, Textika creates it.

Is my text saved automatically?

Yes, every two seconds. An orange dot on the tab means there are changes that haven't been saved yet. You can also save with ⌘S.

Why does Textika ask me to choose a folder?

Textika runs in Apple's sandbox and can only reach the files and folders you choose yourself. If you create a file outside a workspace, you pick a folder for it once, and Textika then uses that folder for new files.

What does clean word count mean?

The Markdown syntax, like # and **, isn't counted, so you only count the words you've written. You switch between raw and clean in Settings or in the status bar.

Which keyboard shortcuts are there?

New file ⌘T, open folder ⇧⌘O, save ⌘S, Quick Open ⌘P, command palette ⌘K, sidebar ⌘B, focus mode ⌘⇧., preview ⌘\, cheat sheet ⌘/ and settings ⌘,.
